FPP Best Practices
To limit the risk of fires, good housekeeping is critical. All employees should take the following precautions:
- Minimize the storage of combustible materials.
- Keep exit routes like doors, hallways, and stairs clear of obstructions.
- Dispose of combustible waste in covered metal containers that are airtight.
- Store and use flammable materials in areas that are well-ventilated and away from sources of ignition.
- Choose only nonflammable cleaning products.
- Separate chemically reactive substances from each other.
- Conduct "hot work," like welding, in areas that are controlled and have good ventilation.
- Keep all equipment, including electrical wiring and appliances, in good working order. Regularly inspect motors and machine tools to make sure they are free of dust and grease.
- Make sure heating units are safeguarded.
- Immediately report any gas leaks. A designated person should ensure that these leaks are repaired as soon as possible.
- Clean up and repair flammable liquid leaks without delay.
- Keep work areas free from dust, lint, sawdust, scraps, and similar materials.
- If additional wiring is needed, don't rely on extension cords. Also, avoid overloading circuits with multiple devices.
- Make sure to obtain the necessary hot work permits.
- Turn off electrical equipment when it's not in use.
