What is a Scaffold?
A scaffold is a temporary elevated platform and its supporting structure used for supporting workers or materials or both. There are three basic types of scaffolds: Supported, Suspended, and Other Scaffolds.
Supported Scaffolds:, which consist of one or more platforms supported by rigid, load-bearing members. Examples include:
- Frame scaffolds
- Tube and coupler scaffolds
- System scaffolds (e.g., modular scaffolds)
- Bricklayer’s scaffolds (single scaffolds)
- Mason’s scaffolds (double scaffolds)
- Wooden pole scaffolds
Suspended Scaffolds: These scaffolds consist of one or more platforms suspended by ropes or other non-rigid, overhead supports. Examples include:
- Two-point (swing) suspension scaffolds
- Single-point suspension scaffolds
- Multi-level suspension scaffolds
- Needle-beam scaffolds
Other Scaffolds: These scaffolds are less common or specialized for unique tasks. They are sometimes thought of as vehicles or machinery, but can be regarded as another type of supported scaffold.
- Mobile scaffolds (rolling scaffolds)
- Outrigger scaffolds
- Aerial lifts (e.g., scissor lifts, boom lifts)
- Trestle scaffolds
- Ladder jack scaffolds
- Pump jack scaffolds
