Work Practice Controls

Work practice controls are mandated procedures and rules that must be followed by employees to reduce exposure.

Typically, work practice controls are discussed in policies, programs, processes, and procedures to reduce or minimize exposure to a hazard. Examples of these controls for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases include policies regarding:

  • social distancing
  • stay at home if ill
  • minimizing contact with others
  • implementing telework if feasible
  • alternating days or extra shifts
  • discontinuing nonessential travel
  • developing emergency communications plans
  • information on COVID-19 risk factors and protective behaviors
  • procedures for hands-on practice of personal hygiene, cough etiquette, and use and care of PPE
