Fluids that Do Not Spread Bloodborne Pathogens
According to NIOSH, as long a the following fluids and materials are not mixed with blood do not carry the risk of transmitting pathogens:
- sweat
- saliva (during non-dental procedures)
- urine
- feces
- nasal secretions
- tears
- sputum
- vomitus
Although the risk of contracting a bloodborne pathogen from these bodily fluids and materials might be low, you may not always be able to tell if the fluids you are handling has mixed them with blood.
For example, a severe abdominal injury could cause blood to be present in urine or feces. Therefore, it is best to protect yourself from ALL bodily fluids.
