Radiation: Ionizing and Non-Ionizing

Radiation sources are found in a wide range of occupational settings.

Electromatic Spectrum

If radiation is not properly controlled, it can be potentially hazardous to the health of workers.

  • Ionizing radiation: All forms of ionizing radiation have sufficient energy to dislodge an atom's electrons. Ionization may destabilize molecules within cells and lead to tissue damage.
  • Non-ionizing radiation: This form of radiation does not have enough energy to dislodge an atom's electrons. It is essential to life, but excessive exposures will cause tissue damage.
