HCS Pictogram Requirements

The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) requires pictograms on labels to alert users of the chemical hazards to which they may be exposed.

Pictograms are an important addition to the hazard communication tools in the standard.

Eight pictograms are designated under the standard for application to a hazard category. Under the HCS, pictograms are black symbols, on a white background, with a red diamond border.

Pictograms have long been used internationally because they convey information without text. This allows users who are either literate in a different language than that used on the label or who are not literate at all to understand that the chemical is hazardous.
