During this first step, the trainer discusses the learning objectives and answers any questions the learner might have.

In the first step, the trainer introduces personal information and the topic that will be presented.

The trainer should:

  • Ask learners to introduce themselves.
  • Describe the procedure to be trained.
  • Discuss the acceptable standards for knowledge and performance.
  • Emphasize the importance of the procedure to the success of the production/service goals.
  • Invite questions and concerns learners might have about the procedure.
  • Emphasize the importance of the topic by discussing natural and system consequences of performance.

Step 2: Trainer Shows and Tells

In this step, the learner becomes familiar with safe work practices in each step and why they are important.

Step 2: The trainer shows and tells.
  • The trainer explains, demonstrates each step, and addresses any questions the learner may have.
  • The trainer continues to demonstrate and explain each step until the learner understands how to do it.

How can the trainer know the employee understands the procedure completely? If the employee can correctly restate each step in the procedure and how to do it, the trainer can be assured the learner has adequate knowledge.
