Competent persons should inspect and document trenches and excavations. They should have the authority to require workers to get out of unsafe trenches.

OSHA trenching rules specify the frequency and conditions requiring inspections:
- Daily and before the start of each shift
- As dictated by the work being done in the trench
- After every rainstorm
