Exposure to Hexavalent Chromium Cr(VI)

Health Effects

Exposure to chromium VI (hexavalent chromium) can have various adverse health effects.

HexChEC Introduction

Here's a brief overview of the health effects associated with exposure to chromium VI:

  • Respiratory Effects: Inhalation of airborne chromium VI particles can irritate the respiratory system, causing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and nasal irritation. Prolonged exposure may lead to the development of respiratory conditions such as bronchitis or asthma.
  • Skin Effects: Direct contact with chromium VI compounds can cause skin irritation, redness, and dermatitis. Prolonged or repeated exposure may lead to the development of skin ulcers, sores, or allergic reactions, characterized by itching, swelling, and blistering.
  • Eye Effects: Contact with chromium VI can cause irritation, redness, and inflammation of the eyes. Severe exposure may result in eye damage, including conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, or even vision impairment.
  • Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may develop sensitization or allergies to chromium VI upon repeated exposure. This can lead to allergic reactions upon subsequent contact, ranging from mild skin rashes to severe systemic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing, or anaphylaxis.
  • Respiratory and Nasal Cancers: Prolonged exposure to airborne chromium VI has been associated with an increased risk of developing lung cancer, particularly among workers in certain industries such as chrome plating, stainless steel production, and welding. There is also evidence linking occupational exposure to nasal and sinus cancers.
  • Other Health Effects: Ingestion or inhalation of high levels of chromium VI can cause acute toxic effects, such as gastrointestinal issues, including stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, it can lead to damage to the liver, kidneys, and other organs.

Strict adherence to safety regulations and effective control measures can help minimize exposure and reduce the associated health risks.
