Training

Safety education is composed of three primary components: instruction, training, and evaluation to ensure employees have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) required to work safe on the job.

Education includes instruction, training, and evaluation.
  1. Instruction: Instruction should include OSHA regulations, company safety policies, programs, procedures, and how to avoid unsafe conditions.
  2. Training: Training must include instructor demonstration and employee practice.
  3. Evaluation: A competent person, certified, and designated as qualified to use equipment and perform procedures should evaluate employee abilities while on the job.

Employer Responsibilities

Employers must develop a suitable safety training program. OSHA will ALWAYS inspect the safety training program during an OSHA inspection.

Below are training responsibilities and a video that might be used in a safety orientation or tool-box meeting.

  • Provide an information and training program for all employees exposed to lead above the action level or who may suffer skin or eye irritation from lead.
  • Inform these employees about the specific hazards in their workplace, protective measures, the danger to their bodies, and their rights.
  • Make available a copy of the standard and its appendices and distribute to employees any materials provided by OSHA.
  • Train new employees prior to initial assignment to areas where there is a possible exposure over the action level and annually thereafter.
