113 Introduction to Safety Leadership

Introduction

This course is an introduction to the basic elements of effective safety leadership with emphasis on successful leadership styles and how to demonstrate safety leadership through active involvement in the safety management system (SMS). We'll look at the characteristics of effective leadership, including John Maxwell's Five Levels of Leadership, the Three Leadership Styles, and the many ways leaders can demonstrate leadership in the workplace.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, you should be able to:

LO 1.1.5 Give examples of tough-coercive, tough-controlling, and tough-caring safety leadership.
LO 1.1.6 Define "commitment", how management can best demonstrate it, and how do employees react to it.
LO 1.1.7 Describe the difference between a company's mission and vision statement.
LO 1.1.8 Define and give examples of reactive and proactive safety strategies.
LO 1.2.1 Explain how managers can display "leadership in action."
LO 1.2.2 Describe how leaders can remove barriers to increase employee participation in safety.
