Single-Handle Tools

Single-handle tools are tube-like tools measured by handle length and diameter. The diameter is the length of a straight line through the center of the handle. Two basic ways to grip handles are used when performing tasks with hand tools: "Pinch grips" and "power grips."

Pinch Grip: A pinch grip is a way of holding a hand tool with a smaller, narrower, handle using the thumb and fingertips.

Use the pinch grip for small precision tasks.

This type of grip is typically used for tasks requiring precision and fine control, rather than force.

  • Hand tools that require small, narrow handles:
    • Precision screwdrivers
    • Tweezers
    • Needle-nose pliers
    • Dental tools
    • Small paintbrushes

Power Grip: A power grip is a way of holding a hand tool where the fingers and thumb wrap around a larger, wider handle, creating a strong and secure grip.

Use the power grip for larger forceful tasks.

This type of grip allows for maximum force and control, making it ideal for forceful tasks that require significant strength and stability.

  • Hand tools that require large, wide handles:
    • Sledgehammers
    • Axes
    • Shovels
    • Heavy-duty wrenches
    • Pruning shears
