Introduction

This course is designed to acquaint you with some of the requirements and important safety practices when using hand and power tools in the workplace as detailed in OSHA 1910 Subpart P. Special attention is given to choosing tools properly to prevent ergonomic injuries, and electrical safety guidelines necessary in order to reduce or eliminate shock hazards.

At the end of this course, you should be able to:

LO 1.2.1 List and give examples of power tools that present the greatest hazards to users.
LO 1.2.2 Describe and give examples of the use of guards to protect employees from exposure to moving power tool parts.
LO 1.2.3 Describe the requirements for power tool operating controls and switches.
LO 1.2.4 Describe and give examples of the safe and proper and safe use of extension cords while using power tools and equipment.
LO 1.2.5 Define "grounding" and describe the hazards associated with improperly grounding of electrical circuits.
LO 1.2.6 Describe the purpose and use of ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) while operating power tools and equipment.
LO 1.2.7 Define "double-insulation" and describe how it protects power tool operators from electrical shock and injury.
LO 1.2.8 Describe the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with hand and power tools.
LO 1.2.9 Describe best practices for operating power tools.
