31.E.08 Chopping tools.

  1. Chopping tools that have loose or cracked heads or splintered handles must not be used.
In the right hands, chopping tools are safe!
  1. Chopping tools must never be used while working aloft.
  2. Chopping tools must be swung away from the feet, legs, and body, using the minimum power practical for control.
  3. Chopping tools must not be driven as wedges or used to drive metal wedges.
  4. All edged tools and blades must be properly sheathed when not in use.

31.E.09 Cant hooks, tongs, and carrying bars.

  1. Hooks must be firmly set before applying pressure.
  2. Workers must be warned and must be in the clear before logs are moved.
  3. The points of hooks must be at least 2 in (5 cm) long and must be kept sharp.
  4. Workers must stand to the rear and uphill when rolling logs.

31.E.10 Wedges and chisels.

  1. Wedges and chisels must be properly pointed and tempered.
  2. Only wood, plastic, or soft metal wedges must be used with power saws.
  3. Wood-handled chisels should be protected with a ferrule on the striking end.
