Nail Gun Training

The purpose of nail gun training is to improve employee competencies (knowledge, skills, and abilities) that they need to safely use nail guns for a variety of tasks on the worksite.

Studies of residential carpenters found the overall risk of nail gun injury is twice as high when using contact firing trigger nail guns compared to using sequential trigger nail guns. About 1 in 10 nail gun injuries happen to co-workers. This is from either airborne (projectile) nails or bumping into a co-worker while carrying a contact trigger nail gun with the trigger squeezed.

By providing workers with the knowledge and skills they need to identify and avoid nail gun hazards, construction safety training can reduce the risk of injury accidents and damage to property. It also helps to promote a culture of safety in the workplace, where workers are encouraged to be vigilant and take steps to protect themselves and others.

Introduction. If necessary, introduce yourself, position, and backgroud. Have employees introduce themselves. Use a real-life scenario like the one below to emphasize the importance of nail gun safety.

"A carpenter apprentice on his first day ever using a nail gun injured his right leg. He was working on a step ladder and was in the process of lowering the nail gun to his side when the gun struck his leg and fired a nail into it. He had no training prior to using the nail gun. New worker training is important and should include hands-on skills."

Step 1: Familiarize employees with the nail gun they will use.

It's important to read the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Discuss the different parts of the nail gun, such as the trigger, contact point, and energy source.

Step 2: Wear safety gear

Discuss the use of personal protective equipment. When using a nail gun, always wear safety gear such as safety glasses, ear protection, and gloves. This will protect employees from any debris that may be kicked up when firing nails.

Step 3: Practice on scrap wood

It's a good idea to first practice using the nail gun on scrap wood. This will help employees get a feel for the nail gun and ensure that they're comfortable using it.

Step 4: Set the depth adjustment

Different materials require different nail depths, so it's important to adjust the depth of the nail gun to the right setting for the material you're working with. Adjust the depth by turning the depth adjustment wheel.

Step 5: Load the magazine

To load the magazine, open the magazine door and insert the nails. Make sure that the nails are facing in the right direction and that they're lined up correctly.

Step 6: Hold the nail gun correctly

When holding the nail gun, have a firm grip on the handle and use the other hand to support the front of the nail gun.

Step 7: Position the nail gun

Before firing the nail gun, position it at a 90-degree angle to the surface being nailed. This will ensure that the nail goes in straight and doesn't damage the surface.

Step 8: Fire the nail gun

To fire the nail gun, press the trigger and make sure that the safety switch is off. Keep the fingers away from the firing area and don't point the nail gun at anyone.

Step 9: Continue nailing

Continue nailing until the task is completed. Remember to reload the magazine when it runs out of nails.

Step 10: Clean and store the nail gun

When finished using the nail gun, it's important to clean it and store it properly. This will help ensure that it lasts for a long time and stays in good condition.
