Individual Rights

Under HIPAA, patients are entitled to more information about and more control over their individual health information.

  1. Access to Information: Individuals can request a copy of their health data, in electronic form if preferred. A reasonable fee may be charged by the covered entity for paper or electronic copies.
  2. Amend Information: Individuals can seek corrections to their records. However, covered entities are only responsible for amending records they've created.

  2. Privacy Practices Notice: Every individual can obtain a written privacy practices notice from covered entities, outlining their rights and the entity's HIPAA obligations.
