Vapor Density

The density of a gas or vapor can be compared to the density of the ambient atmosphere.

Flammable Vapors
  • If the density of a vapor or gas is greater than that of the ambient air, then it will settle to the lowest point; and
  • If the vapor density is close to air density or lower, the vapor will tend to disperse in the atmosphere.

It is important to know the vapor density of gases or vapors, since it can determine the proper response action at an emergency release.
