Routes of Entry

There are four routes of entry for toxicants.

Toolbox Talk: Routes of Entry
  1. Inhalation: Inhalation is the most common means by which toxic substances enter the body. Fumes, mists, gases, and vapors often pass easily from the lungs into the bloodstream and then move on to target organs.
  2. Absorption: Absorption through the skin or eye is a typical route of exposure. Many toxic substances can readily permeate healthy skin and enter the bloodstream.
  1. Ingestion (Oral): Eating, drinking, or smoking is a common way for substances to enter the body. Once in the digestive tract lining, they may be absorbed through the lining into the bloodstream.
  2. Injection: Injection is one of the fastest ways to administer a toxicant. This usually occurs by exposure to open wounds.
