Confined Space Training Requirements

It's important the employer provides training, so all employees who are required to perform confined space entry operations acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs).

Training should be provided to each affected employee before there is a change in assigned duties.

Employers must also ensure employees receive regular practice to help ensure performance of their duties in confined spaces.

Confined Space Training Triggers

Training should be provided to each affected employee:

  • before the employee is first assigned duties under this section;
  • whenever the employee demonstrates inadequate knowledge;
  • before there is a change in assigned duties;
  • whenever there is a change in permit space operations that presents a hazard for which an employee has not been trained;
  • whenever there are deviations from the permit space entry procedures.

It's important to understand if properly instructed and trained employees intentionally engage in horseplay or otherwise violate safety rules, discipline, rather than retraining may be necessary.

Training should establish employee proficiency in his or her confined space entry procedures and the task being performed within the confined space. Hands-on demonstration of confined space entry, use of PPE and work procedures is necessary to verify proficiency.
