Safety Education

Safety education aims to inform, persuade, and motivate students to participate and work safely. Its most crucial goal is to demonstrate the importance of working safely.

Why do you think many employees don't follow safe practices at work? Often, it's because they don't understand why it's important. Therefore, the most crucial task for us as safety trainers is to ensure our students realize the importance of working safely.

The Total Safety KSA Education Process

The Total Safety KSA Education Process includes three basic strategies to teach employees. These strategies help employees acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs).

The KSA Education Process - K+S+A=Peformance

The three basic strategies are: instruction, training, and experience.

  1. Instruction: This step transfers Knowledge. It's the starting point of the educational process. We need to understand something before we can do it.
  2. Training: This provides the initial Skills. After gaining knowledge, we focus on learning how to apply it.
  3. Experience: Over time, this improves Abilities. Learners gain real-world experience outside the classroom, where true learning happens. Our performance gets better as we gain more experience.

We will explore each of these educational strategies in the upcoming modules. But first, in the next section, let's examine the psychological process of education. Understanding how we learn psychologically helps us see that all our experiences, both internal and external, contribute to our education.
