Safety Instruction

General safety instruction typically takes place in a classroom, on the workfloor, or even around a tailgate during a course or meeting.

Safety instruction focuses on giving employees the knowledge they need to work safely.

Instruction may also be given using various methods such as written notices, newsletters, or videos. This method can be quite effective for conveying both essential and additional 'nice to know' information. For instance, general safety instruction may cover topics like:

  • Employee safety orientation
  • Steps in conducting a root cause analysis
  • Introduction to the elements of our safety management system
  • Safety management principles
  • Management of the Employee Assistance Program
  • Basics of engineering controls

Documenting Safety Instruction

To record attendance for instruction, an attendance roster is usually sufficient. This is because students may not need to show proof of what they have learned. However, if there is a requirement to demonstrate their learning, a written test is an effective method. It formally records the results. Keep in mind the OSHA saying, 'If it isn't in writing, it didn't get done.'
