Step, Platform and Trestle Ladder Scaffolds

A step, platform and trestle ladder scaffold is a supported scaffold consisting of a platform supported directly on the rungs of step ladders or a building wall.

Step, Platform, and Trestle Ladder Scaffold is commonly used by painters.
  • Verify scaffold platforms are placed no higher than the second-highest rung or step of the ladder supporting the platform.
  • Check that all ladders meet the requirements of 1926 Subpart X (Stairways and Ladders).
  • Ensure ladders are prevented from slipping by how they are placed, fastened or equipped.
  • Make sure job-made ladders are not permitted to be used for these scaffolds.
  • Make sure these scaffolds are not bridged one to another.

Plasterer, Decorator, and Large-Area Scaffolds

Plasterer, Decorator, and Large-Area Scaffolds must be constructed in accordance with 29 CFR 1926.452(a)(b), and (c) for:

  • Pole scaffolds - 29 CFR 1926 Subpart L Appendix A(2)(a)
  • Tube and coupler scaffolds - 29 CFR 1926 Subpart L Appendix A(2)(b)
  • Fabricated frame scaffolds - 29 CFR 1926 Subpart L Appendix A(2)(c)

Also, check to make sure Plasterer, Decorator, and Large-Area Scaffolds are constructed in accordance with the non-mandatory guidelines in 1926 Subpart L, Appendix A(2). An employer may use these non-mandatory guidelines and tables as a starting point for designing scaffold systems. However, the guidelines do not provide all the information necessary to build a complete system, and the employer is still responsible for designing and assembling these components in such a way that the completed system will meet the requirements of 1926.451(a)
