Fall Prevention and Protection
For many in the construction industry, fall prevention and mitigation is accomplished primarily using fall protection equipment. Equipment includes personal fall-arrest/restraint systems, safety nets, or guardrails, for example.
Falls can be prevented or limited by training employees how to address fall hazards using two primary strategies: fall prevention and fall protection.
- Fall Prevention: Workers prevent falls by eliminating the need to work above ground level and by using passive fall prevention controls such as using guardrails, positioning and restraint systems, and hole covers.
- Fall Protection: Workers limit injury after a fall by using active fall protection such as personal fall arrest systems (PFAS) or safety nets, and having an effective rescue plan.
