Refresher Forklift Training
Refresher training is required whenever the operator demonstrates inadequate knowledge, skills, or abilities (KSAs) in forklift operation.
An excellent method to ensure experienced forklift operators have maintained adequate KSAs is to require the operator to teach the training to the evaluator. The video on this page illustrates how this method might be used.

Refresher may also be needed if the operator has been involved in an accident, near miss, or unintentional unsafe forklift operation. If the operator is engaged in intentional unsafe forklift operation, discipline may also be required. If an operator is assigned to a new type of forklift or if workplace conditions change that could affect safety, then refresher training is required.
Refresher training in relevant topics must be provided to the operator when:
- The operator has been observed to operate the vehicle in an unsafe manner.
- The operator has been involved in an accident or near-miss incident.
- The operator has received an evaluation that reveals that the operator is not operating the truck safely.
- The operator is assigned to drive a different type of truck.
- A condition in the workplace changes in a manner that could affect safe operation of the truck.
- Each operator's performance must be evaluated at least once every three years.
Employers should keep records of all refresher training provided to forklift operators, including the date, topics covered, and attendees. By providing regular refresher training, employers demonstrate their commitment to maintaining a safe work environment and ensuring that forklift operators possess the necessary knowledge and skills to operate the equipment safely.
