Examples of Confined Spaces in Construction

It is important to note that each construction site may have unique confined spaces based on its specific activities, structures, and equipment.

Here are some common examples:

  • Tanks and Vessels: Tanks used for storing liquids or gases, such as fuel tanks, water tanks, or storage vessels, can often be considered confined spaces due to their limited access and potential for hazardous atmospheres.
  • Silos and Hoppers: Silos, bins, and hoppers used for storing bulk materials, such as grain, cement, or sand, may qualify as confined spaces. They can have limited entry points, and the stored materials can create engulfment hazards or emit harmful gases.
  • Equipment and Machinery: Some equipment or machinery may have confined spaces within them, such as boilers, ductwork, or mechanical rooms. These spaces can pose risks due to the presence of moving parts, hot surfaces, or hazardous substances.
  • Pipelines and Sewers: Underground pipelines, sewers, or utility tunnels can be confined spaces. They are one of the most common types of confined spaces on construction sites. They often have limited access points and may contain hazardous gases, lack proper ventilation, or present other physical hazards.
  • Access Shafts and Chambers: Access shafts and chambers associated with utilities, such as water or sewer systems, can be confined spaces. These spaces can have restricted entry points and may contain hazardous materials or gases.
  • Crawl spaces: Crawl spaces such as attics are typically small and require workers to crawl or crouch, which can restrict movement and make it challenging to escape in case of an emergency.

Note: Trenches and excavations are regulated by OSHA 1926.651, Excavations. However, confined spaces such as pipes existing inside trenches or excavations may be regulated by OSHA 1926.1201.
