Inspection of Repaired/Adjusted Equipment

Equipment that requires a repair or adjustment to ensure safe operation must be inspected.

Competent person inspecting repaired equipment before use
A competent qualified person needs to inspect repaired equipment prior to use.

A qualified person must perform the inspection prior to initial use. Examples of this type of equipment include:

  • safety devices or operator aids
  • critical parts control systems
  • power plants
  • braking systems
  • load-sustaining structural components
  • load hooks
  • in-use operating mechanisms

A qualified person must determine if the repair/adjustment meets manufacturer equipment criteria.

Where manufacturer equipment criteria are unavailable or inapplicable, a qualified person must determine if a registered professional engineer (RPE) is needed to develop criteria for the repair/adjustment. If a RPE is not needed, the criteria would be developed by a qualified person.

The inspection must determine if the repair/adjustment meets the criteria developed by the RPE or qualified person and must include functional testing.
