The Oil and Gas Safety Committee

The purpose of a safety and health committee is to give employees the ability to participate in the company's safety and health management system. They help the employer identify, assess, and control hazards

The main incentive for developing a safety committee is greater safety effectiveness as a result of more employee involvement in the company safety program. More employee involvement results in greater input and data which are critical to a successful safety program. A safety committee is one way to obtain that input. The degree of employee involvement (participation) and management commitment (participation, time and money) will determine the success of the safety committee.

Safety committees have many benefits:

  • They help identify safety and health concerns that workers/management consider most critical
  • They help find creative solutions
  • Safety committees help indicate a good faith effort in complying with OSHA regulations
  • The can help boost coworker loyalty, morale and enthusiasm by getting involved in an issue that's important to everyone.
  • If new safety rules are needed, a safety committee can help make sure employees accept and follow them.
