902 Well Site Preparation and Drilling Safety
Skip to main content

Leveling the Site

Before well drilling can begin, the company must clear vegetation, level the site, and construct a pad for the drilling rig and other equipment used in preparing the well. The site is leveled (if necessary) with a bulldozer and/or a grader.

Leveling the Site

Potential Hazards

  • damaging buried pipelines and cables;
  • unpredictable weather changes creating unexpected hazards;
  • toxic plants, and pollens; and
  • uneven ground causing bulldozers to roll over.

Possible Solutions

  • performing a site line location survey;
  • planning for hazards due to unpredictable changing weather;
  • after weather changes, conducting inspections for new hazards;
  • protecting employees engaged in site clearing from hazards of irritant and toxic plants;
  • teaching employees about available first aid treatments;
  • providing rollover guards on all equipment used in site clearing operations; and
  • providing overhead and rear canopy guards on rider-operated equipment
