Setting Up the Rig Floor and Mast or Derrick

Once the substructure is set in place, the process of setting up the rig floor begins.

  • Install the stairways and guardrails to allow access to the rig floor.
  • Set the drawworks in place and secure it to the substructure.
Raising the Mast
  • On mechanical rigs, set the engines in place
  • The compound and associated equipment are connected to the drawworks.
  • On electric rigs, the electric cables (lines) are strung to the drawworks.
  • Raise the bottom of the mast to the rig floor and pin it in place.
  • Raise the crown section into place on the derrick stand.
  • Raise the "A-legs" and pin them into place.
  • Pin the monkeyboard in place on the mast.
  • Lay out all lines and cables to prevent tangling when the mast is raised.

Finally, conduct a thorough inspection of all floor equipment, and mast components before it is raised.

The mast is now ready to be raised.

  • Start the engines and spool the drilling line onto the drawworks drum.
  • Once the mast has been raised and pinned, set the remaining floor equipment into place.
  • If the rig has safety guylines, attach them to the anchors and properly tension them prior to continuing the rigging up process.
  • Install a derrick emergency escape device on the mast.

After the mast/derrick is raised, conduct a thorough second inspection of the drawworks, floor equipment, mast, guylines, anchors, and emergency escape device.
