Asbestos
Asbestos is well recognized as a health hazard and its use is now highly regulated by both OSHA and EPA.
OSHA has set a permissible exposure limit (PEL) for asbestos of 0.1 fiber per cubic centimeter (f/cc) for work in all industries. This standard has also been adopted by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Breathing asbestos fibers can cause a buildup of scar-like tissue in the lungs called asbestosis and result in loss of lung function that often progresses to disability and death. Asbestos can also cause lung cancer such as mesothelioma. Asbestos fibers associated with these health risks are too small to be seen with the naked eye.
Many people have come into contact with asbestos fibers through their jobs (occupational exposure). It's important that you do not disturb anything that contains asbestos so that it doesn't get into the air.
