Rick Hemion, after retiring from the Army in October 2018 with 22 years of service, was uncertain about his next steps. After applying for several jobs, he was hired by a corporation managing the Integrated Facilities Management contract for the Army installation where he had retired. Rick began as the Transportation and Training Supervisor in the EH&S Department, overseeing a fleet of work trucks and managing employee training records.

Soon after starting, Rick was sent to OSHAcademy's 40-hour HAZWOPER program to assist with spill cleanups when needed. His supervisor also encouraged him to sign up for a 30 hour Construction Safety and Health program and that’s when he discovered OSHAcademy. After completing this program, Rick explored OSHAcademy’s website and came across the Veterans Discount page. He enrolled in the 40-hour EM 385-1-1 Construction Safety Hazard Awareness for Contractors program for free. Energized by this opportunity, he completed the course and enrolled in the 192-hour Construction Safety and Health Professional program.

Shortly after finishing these courses, a safety position opened in Rick’s department. Thanks to the training provided by OSHAcademy, he secured the safety position along with a $2 raise, despite not having the required degree. Now, Rick serves as the EH&S Site Safety Manager.

Reflecting on his journey, Rick says, “OSHAcademy training is helping me to continue to build our safety program and grooming me for success.” He expresses his gratitude to OSHAcademy for their dedication to supporting veterans and their future careers.
