OSHA On-Site Consultation
OSHA's On-site Consultation Program provides free and confidential advice to small and medium-sized businesses across all states, with priority given to high-hazard worksites. In the fiscal year 2015, the program responded to requests from small employers who wanted to create or improve their injury and illness prevention programs. During this time, OSHA's consultants made about 28,000 visits to small business worksites, helping to protect over 1.4 million workers nationwide.
On-site Consultation services provided by OSHA are separate from enforcement activities, meaning they do not lead to penalties or citations. Consultants from state agencies or universities work with employers to spot workplace hazards, offer advice on complying with OSHA standards, and help develop programs to prevent injuries and illnesses.

Because consultation is a voluntary activity, you must request it. After you make a request, the consultant will discuss your specific needs with you. They will then schedule a visit based on how urgently you need the service, your work schedule, and the preparation time they need to effectively assist you.
- The consultation process starts with an opening conference between you and the consultant before beginning the walk through.
- The consultant will study your entire workplace, identifying both obvious and less apparent safety or health risks, including some that may not fall under specific OSHA standards.
- Once the walk-through is complete, the consultant will review their findings with you before leaving.
- Finally, the consultant will send you a detailed written report. This report will outline the findings and confirm any agreed-upon deadlines for fixing the issues (abatement periods). The consultant might also follow up with you occasionally to check on your progress.
