10-8. General Requirements.
Arc Welding and Cutting
- Install, maintain, and operate all electric welding apparatuses according to the NEC, ensuring the use of manual electrode holders designed for arc welding and cutting, and that welding cables and connectors are fully insulated and in good repair.
- Ground the frames of arc welding and cutting machines properly. Do not use pipelines containing gases or flammable liquids or conduits carrying electrical conductors for a ground return circuit.
- Shield arc welding and cutting operations with noncombustible or flameproof screens to protect employees and others within 35 feet from hazards like sparks and molten metal.
Gas Metal Arc Welding
- Keep chlorinated solvents away from the exposed arc and ensure surfaces prepared with such solvents are dry before welding.
- Protect individuals within 35 feet from the arc with filter lenses and ensure welders wear appropriate gear to shield against UV radiation and airborne contaminants.
- Use approved local exhaust systems to protect against nitrogen dioxide and other air contaminants when welding certain metals, supplementing with respiratory protection if necessary.
Plasma Cutting
- Install, maintain, and operate plasma arc cutting equipment according to the NEC and manufacturer’s instructions, ensuring all consumables are correctly installed.
- Ensure torches used in plasma cutting have a trigger safety device to prevent accidental activation.
Thermite Welding
- Dry the mold for a thermite weld thoroughly, use an acceptable cover before ignition to prevent spray back, and ensure molds cool sufficiently as per manufacturer’s instructions before removal.
- Store bulk thermite welding materials in a dry, locked area away from the welding site, and tightly close containers for the starting material after each use.
- Prohibit smoking in areas where thermite welding material is used or stored.
