26-8. General Requirements.

Ground Support Systems

  • A Qualified Person (QP) must design or review all ground support and excavation systems.
  • Provide suitable protection for employees from loose ground during the installation of these systems.

Hoisting

  • Hoist ways can hoist either materials or personnel, but not both at the same time.

Material Handling Equipment

  • Equip vehicles and mobile equipment with a visible revolving, flashing amber light and ensure it's operational during use.
  • Equip haulage equipment with headlights, a back-up light, and an automatic back-up alarm. Secure tracks for narrow-gauge railroads and use automatic safety couplings and positive locking devices on locomotives and mine dump cars.
  • Operate haulage equipment safely, maintain a clear line of sight during load dumping, and separate non-work vehicles from construction activities.

Waterborne Safety and Flood Prevention

  • Ensure water discharged from sites meets EPA NPDES and local authority requirements. Test water for hazards to keep exposure below OELs.
  • Implement measures to prevent flooding near water sources and equip personnel in wet underground areas with appropriate protective gear.

Compressed Air Work

  • Perform work in compressed air environments in compliance with 29 CFR 1926.803, including developing a CAWP as specified.
