Exposed Workplaces

The CPP should address actions to take in an exposed workplace. This is a work location, working area, or common area used or accessed by a COVID-19 case during the high-risk period. Exposed workplaces include bathrooms, walkways, hallways, aisles, break or eating areas, and waiting areas.

If a COVID-19 case enters a workplace, the workplace is exposed.

The exposed workplace includes only the building areas where the COVID-19 cases were present during the high-risk exposure period.

High-Risk Periods

A high-risk exposure period is:

  • For symptomatic COVID-19 cases, from two days before they first develop symptoms until 10 days after symptoms first appeared. Twenty-four hours must have passed with no fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications, and symptoms have improved.
  • For asymptomatic persons who test positive, from two days before until ten days after the specimen for their first positive test for COVID-19 was collected.

The CPP should include the following:

  • Policies and procedures for multiple COVID-19 infections and COVID-19 outbreaks should be required, If, within 14 days, three COVID-19 cases share the same exposed workplace.
  • Testing is not required in a work area where masked workers momentarily pass through the same space without interacting or congregating.
