Site Evaluation
Before employees begin cleanup work at a new site, a designated qualified person must do a preliminary evaluation to identify hazards and determine how to protect them with engineering controls, work practices, and personal protective equipment.
These workers are conducting an initial site evaluation.
The evaluation should include areas immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH), and areas that exceed published exposure levels. Soon after employees begin working at the site, the qualified person must evaluate the site.
Site evaluation focuses on the following:
- the site's hazards, including the physical or chemical properties of hazardous substances and how employees could be exposed to the hazards
- employee health and safety risks associated with exposure to hazardous substances
- places where hazardous substances could leak
- location, size, topography, and access to the site
- what jobs employees do and how long it will take to accomplish them
- qualifications of emergency responders and approximate response times
- personal protective equipment that employees need to do their jobs
