Other Important Labeling Requirements

Labels are ineffective unless they accurately communicate the hazards of their associated chemicals. It's important to keep labels in good condition at all times.

Revise labels as required.

Employers must not remove or deface existing labels on incoming containers of hazardous chemicals, unless these containers are immediately marked with the required information.

When incoming containers of hazardous materials are received, employers must ensure they are marked with accurate warning labels. The employer must ensure that labels or other forms of warning are:

  • legible and in English
  • prominently displayed on the container
  • readily available in the work area throughout each work shift

Employers with employees who speak other languages may include information in those languages on the materials, provided that the information is also presented in English.
