Information and Training

Employers must provide employees with effective information and training on hazardous chemicals in the workplace. Additionally, employers must verify that employees have adequate knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs).

Information and training on hazardous chemicals should be conducted in the employee's work area at:

  • The time of their initial assignment.
  • Whenever a new chemical hazard is introduced into the workplace and employees have not received initial training on that hazard.

To properly train employees, a competent person should:

  • Instruct employees on the chemical, required personal protective equipment (PPE), and associated Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).
  • Demonstrate the proper use of the chemical.
  • Allow employees to practice using the chemical under supervision.
  • Evaluate each employee’s performance to ensure understanding.
  • Certify that employees have acquired the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to handle the chemicals safely.
