Training

Respirator training ensures that users understand how to properly use and wear a respirator, which is essential for effective protection against hazardous airborne contaminants.

Respirator Training

For an effective respirator program, it's essential that both supervisors and workers receive proper training from a competent person on:

  • Selecting appropriate protection
  • Donning (putting on) and Doffing (taking off) respirators
  • Using respirators correctly
  • Storing and maintaining respirators
  • Detecting defects
  • Ensuring a proper fit
  • Testing for a proper seal

Initial and annual respirator education should include instruction, training, and evaluation to ensure employees acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) for proper use and maintenance of respirators.

  1. Instruction: The instructional component can be conducted online, in the classroom, or in the work area. It helps employees understand the various topics including the types or respirators, fit testing, and required filters.
  2. Training: The training component must include hands-on practice with the actual respirators employees will use. Practice will give employees the skills on the proper use, care, and storage of the respirator. Make sure students wear the respirator in normal air for a long familiarity period and then in a test atmosphere.
  3. Evaluation: The evaluation component takes place in the workplace after completion of the training. The supervisor or other competent person will evaluate the employee's ability to use the respirator at work. Once the evaluator is satisfied, the employee will be certified as fully qualified.
