Sound and Noise

Sound is what you hear. While a dog might hear sounds that are inaudible to you, you can also physically feel the sound vibrations from sources like a jet preparing for takeoff.

Noise is always sound, but sound isn't always noise.

However, most of us associate sound—our perception of very small, rapid changes in air pressure—with things we can hear.

Noise is any sound that you don't want to hear. Although one person's noise may be another person's music, there's a point at which sound becomes a problem for all of us: when it's so loud that it destroys our ability to hear the sounds we want to hear.
