Six Basic Rules

These six basic safety rules can help prevent hazards associated with the use of hand and power tools:

  1. Keep tools in good condition with regular preventive maintenance.
  2. Use only the proper tool for the job.
  3. Do NOT engage in horseplay while using hand or power tools.

  1. Examine each tool for damage before and after each use and do not use damaged tools.
  2. Operate tools according to the manufacturers' instructions.
  3. Properly use the right personal protective equipment (PPE) for the tool and job.

Employees and employers should work together to develop training on safe work procedures and practices for using tools. If an employee encounters a hazardous situation, it should be brought to the attention of the supervisor or lead worker immediately.
