Classes of Molds

Mold seems likely to grow and become a problem only when there is water damage, high humidity, or dampness. Molds are organized into three groups according to human responses: Toxic, Allergenic, Pathogenic.

Mold: Worker and Employer Guide

Toxigenic Molds - EPA Class A

Mycotoxins can cause serious health effects in almost anybody. They can be produced by or are contained within some fungal spores and may remain present in the fungal material even if the mold spores are not viable - i.e. have been "killed" by a chemical disinfectant (bleach). These agents have toxic effects ranging from short-term irritation to immuno-suppression and possibly cancer. Therefore, when toxigenic molds are found, further evaluation is recommended.

Allergenic Molds - EPA Class B

Allergenic molds do not usually produce life-threatening health effects and are most likely to affect those who are already allergic or asthmatic. The human system responses to allergenic molds tend to be relatively mild, depending on individual sensitivities, typically producing scratchy throats, eye and nose irritations, and rashes. Common mold-allergic reactions include allergic rhinitis and asthma.

Pathogenic Molds - EPA Class C

Pathogenic molds usually produce some type of infection. They can cause serious health effects in persons with suppressed immune systems. Healthy people can usually resist infection by these organisms regardless of dose. Fungal or mold-related illnesses that are classed as mycoses result from a fungus that actually grow on or in human or animal tissues. In some cases, high exposure may cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis (an acute response to exposure to an organism).
