Workover and Abandonment Operations Safety

Workover

Workover activities include one or more types of remedial operations performed on a producing oil or gas well. The main goal is to increase or restore production. These operations are often performed using a workover rig. A typical workover crew includes four or more trained workers. The rig is used to complete, stimulate, repair, and maintain an existing well. Because this work involves high-risk equipment and flammable materials, strong safety practices are critical at all times.

Potential Hazards

  • Guy wires: Trip hazards or structural failure if not properly marked or maintained.
  • Live gas production lines (high pressure): Risk of explosion, fire, or exposure to toxic gases.
  • Liquid fuels and hydraulic fluids: Flammable materials that can ignite if spilled or exposed to sparks or heat.
  • Existing producing gas wells: Blowout or pressure release risk during workover operations.
  • Tanks and pits with flammable liquids or chemicals: Potential for inhalation of vapors, burns, or environmental contamination.
  • Single egress/ingress access road: Limited escape and emergency response access in case of an incident.
