Reporting Emergencies

Employees need to know how to report emergencies. They may use internal phone numbers, intercoms, or public address systems to alert other staff. If your company depends on external help like fire, medical, or rescue services, it's crucial for employees to contact these authorities during an emergency.

Develop emergency reporting and communications procedures.

There are standard ways to report emergencies, like dialing 911, using an internal emergency number, or pulling a manual fire alarm. However, other options may also be available.

  • Dialing 911 is often the "go-to" method if your workplace relies on external emergency services.
  • If internal numbers are used for emergencies, these should be displayed near each phone. These internal numbers can also link to intercom systems for coded announcements.
  • Employees might also be asked to activate manual pull stations or other types of alarms.

No matter what system is used, it is imperative that emergency situations be immediately reported. Fires and other emergency situations can reach dangerous levels in seconds and any delay in getting emergency responders to the scene can result in additional loss of life and property.
