Accounting for Employees
Methods to make sure all workers are safe after an evacuation might include designating certain employees to check areas, like offices and restrooms, before they are the last to leave. Another option is doing a roll call at the assembly area. Evacuation wardens can help with keeping track of everyone to ensure the fastest and most accurate accounting of employees.
To make sure everyone is accounted for quickly and accurately, think about including these steps in your EAP:
- Designate assembly areas. Both inside and outside the workplace, choose places where workers should meet after evacuating the building.
- Internal assembly areas often called "areas of refuge," should have enough room for everyone.
- Exterior assembly areas, usually in parking lots or open areas, should be chosen so that workers are upwind of the building.
- Take a head count after the evacuation. Knowing who has safely left the building is crucial. List the names and last places seen of anyone missing and give this info to the person in charge.
- Assembly area design. When picking an assembly area, consider how to keep workers from getting in the way of rescue efforts.
- Account for others. Have a way to keep track of people who aren't employees, like vendors and customers.
- Additional evacuation. Have a backup plan for moving workers again if the situation gets worse. This could mean sending them home or to a different location.
