Assisting Others to Evacuate

A lot of employers designate certain people to be evacuation wardens. They help guide workers from risky areas to safe spots during an emergency. Generally, having one evacuation warden for every 20 workers is adequate, and you should always have the right number of wardens on hand while people are working.

Develop plan to assist visitors and others in an emergency.

Evacuation Wardens might have the job of checking places like offices and bathrooms before they are the last to leave an area. They could also need to make sure fire doors are shut when they leave.

Employees chosen to help with emergency exits should:

  • know the full layout of the workplace and other ways to get out if the main exit is blocked, and
  • be told about workers who need extra help during an evacuation, how to pair up using the buddy system, and which areas to steer clear of during an emergency exit.

Visitors should also be counted after an evacuation and might need extra help getting out. Some workplaces ask all visitors and contractors to sign in. They use this list to make sure everyone is safe in the gathering area. If there are hosts or area wardens, they usually help these people get out safely.
