113 Introduction to Safety Leadership

Leadership Shapes Culture

To workers, culture is their perception of "the way things are done around here." This perception is significantly influenced by the leadership styles that managers display.

You Are a Safety Leader!

Every day, employees, supervisors, and managers have numerous opportunities to communicate and act in ways that exemplify effective safety leadership. Unfortunately, many of these opportunities go unrecognized because they are not perceived as such.

Many employers and managers fail to realize that merely expressing effective leadership can bring about significant improvements to the company's safety culture. The inability to recognize leadership opportunities as they arise hampers the company's potential for success.

It's reasonable to believe that employees at all levels of the organization are well-intentioned individuals doing the best they can with the resources they have. The challenge lies in exhibiting leadership that offers both the necessary physical resources and the psychosocial support to help them achieve the expected results. Ultimately, workplace culture can make or break effective safety management and leadership.
