Conveyor Solutions

To mitigate the hazards associated with conveyor belts, various measures can be implemented.

Note the yellow roller guards on this conveyor.

Here's a list of these measures along with examples for each hazard:

  • Guarding: Install guards around moving parts to prevent access to areas where entanglement could occur.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Require workers to wear fitted clothing, hair nets, and avoid jewelry.
  • Point-of-Operation Guards: Use nip point guards at every point where the conveyor meets another object.
  • Regular Inspections: Routinely inspect conveyors for potential pinch points and repair them.
  • Containment Systems: Use side rails, nets, or barriers to keep objects from falling off the conveyor.
  • Proper Load Balancing: Train workers on correctly loading materials to prevent unbalanced loads.
  • Spillage Management: Implement regular cleanup procedures to address spillage.
  • Safe Access Points: Provide safe access points with railings for elevated conveyor belts.
  • Regular Maintenance: Conduct regular maintenance to identify and fix electrical and mechanical issues.
  • Lockout/Tagout Procedures: Implement lockout/tagout procedures during maintenance.
  • Sound Barriers: Install barriers or absorptive materials to reduce noise levels.
  • Hearing Protection: Provide hearing protection devices to workers in high-noise areas.
  • Dust Suppression Systems: Install dust collection systems to capture airborne particles.
  • Respiratory Protection: Supply appropriate respiratory protection equipment.
  • Ergonomic Training: Train workers on proper lifting techniques and ergonomic practices.
  • Workstation Design: Design workstations to minimize the need for repetitive motions or awkward postures.
  • Awareness Training: Conduct training for workers on staying clear of moving parts.
  • Physical Barriers: Use physical barriers to keep workers away from dangerous areas.
  • Fire-resistant Materials: Use fire-resistant conveyor belts and materials.
  • Fire Suppression Systems: Install fire suppression systems in areas with high fire risk.
