Initial Training and Documentation

  • Provide training as per the Site-Specific Energy Control Plan (SSECP), including the purpose and function of Hazard Isolation Procedures (HIPs).
  • Ensure individuals understand and can safely apply, use, and remove energy-isolating devices.
  • Document the training details, including attendee names, time, date, location, and trainer qualifications.

Training for Specific Roles

  • Under the SSECP, Authorized Individuals must be trained in recognizing hazardous energy sources and methods for energy isolation and control.
  • Affected Persons must understand the purpose and use of HIPs.
  • Incidental Individuals must be aware of energy control procedures and the prohibition against restarting or reenergizing locked or tagged out machines or equipment.

Training on Tagout Systems

  • When tagout systems are used, individuals must learn the limitations of tags.

Retraining Requirements

  • Retrain Authorized Individuals and Affected Persons in HIPs if there is a change in job duties, a new energy control hazard, inadequacies in HIPs knowledge or use, or annually for projects exceeding one year.
  • Ensure retraining reestablishes proficiency and introduces new or revised control methods and procedures as necessary.
