The Mission Statement
After developing the vision statement, the next step is to create a mission statement. The mission statement is important because it outlines the committee's core purpose and the key strategies it will use to achieve that purpose.
The following criteria describe the characteristics of an effective mission statement:
- Clear and Concise: The mission statement should be straightforward and to the point, avoiding complex language or jargon. It should clearly convey the primary purpose of the safety committee in a few sentences. Most often it begins with, "The mission of our safety committee is to… ."
- Purpose-Driven: It should explicitly state the committee's purpose, highlighting why the committee exists and what it aims to achieve. This often includes protecting employees' health and safety and promoting a safe working environment.
- Action-Oriented: The mission statement should include active language that reflects the committee's commitment to proactive safety management. It should convey a sense of action, such as "promoting," "ensuring," "facilitating," or "advocating."
- Inspirational and Motivating: An effective mission statement should inspire and motivate committee members and the broader organization. It should reflect the committee's dedication to creating a safer workplace and encourage others to take safety seriously.
- Aligned with Organizational Values: The mission statement should be consistent with the broader goals and values of the organization. It should reflect the company's commitment to safety and align with its overall mission and vision.
It is the mission of our safety committee to:
- "Promote a culture of safety by identifying hazards, advocating for safety improvements, and fostering open communication to protect the well-being of all employees."
- "Ensure a safe and healthy work environment by proactively identifying risks, educating employees, and supporting continuous improvement in workplace safety practices."
- "Collaborate with all levels of the organization to identify safety concerns, develop effective solutions, and empower employees to take an active role in maintaining a safe workplace."
